They say you’re a New Yorker when you’ve lived—and survived—in this city for 10 years. I was close to that milestone, but getting closer to it made me realize what I had given up to become one. At the top of this list are authentic Ayurvedic body treatments. I used to get them regularly in my previous life in Mumbai and even made sure to book multiple treatments during my annual visits there after I moved out. However, since the pandemic, I have not returned to my hometown for more than three years and I have struggled to get an Ayurvedic massage and the rudeness that comes with it. I realize that being a New Yorker is good and good, but to last another decade in this wonderful city, I need to find therapists a little closer to home who can fill massage space.
With this mission in mind, I tapped into my network of New Yorkers to find masseurs who practice Ayurveda as authentically as possible, and that led me to these therapists and spas. Misa Kubo has undergone years of training under the guidance of Naina Marballi, a renowned New York Ayurvedic physician, and provides treatments in a cozy, quiet room on Murray Hill. Kubo’s gentle and reassuring energy is a stark contrast to my previous Ayurvedic encounters, and I revel in her composure as she takes her pulse and asks a few health questions. My vata was high and dominant that day, so she chose sesame oil and grapeseed oil for my abhyanga and added the Shirodhara therapy with frankincense and a dry head massage. We started with the latter and it was the best 10 minutes of my session. She massaged my scalp with sharp, powerful movements followed by powerful, invigorating pats (aka smack). Although that was not her intention, I took them as a physical manifestation of the verbal criticism I received from Ayurvedic therapists in India, so I immediately ie feel at home. Finally, I was refreshed and alert, and the tension I was holding back in the back of my neck was relieved. As I lay prone on the table, Kubo started with a genius opening act: A heavy gong was placed on my back and struck. This was the ritual that signaled the start of the treatment, and the physical vibrations from the gong were a small sonic bath that spread through my body in waves. Honestly, I would have paid a lot for half an hour of doing it alone. The abhyanga itself is solid and useful. We ended with a 10-minute Shirodhara treatment, in which a steady stream of warm oil was applied to my forehead, an ancient technique for reducing stress. I only feel the effect later at night when I sleep like a well-moisturized baby optimally moisturized from the tips of my hair to my toes. Marie Viellard
I want to emphasize that it is not Maurer’s shot that is causing my heartache. In the end, I think that picture is great. I might put on some glitter face paint the next time I have to feed my baby to add a touch of luxurious sparkle to a sometimes wonderful, sometimes mundane activity in my day. But I don’t think it’s #momgoals either. I think the goals of breastfeeding moms are to deal with less of the resentment and hardship that often occurs around breastfeeding your baby. I think it looks like a really wide array of images when you search for “breastfeeding mom” on Getty, not just a collage of Hallmark Channel stills. NataliaDeriabina I think maybe looks like Ashley Graham looks tired but still beautiful looking after her twins last summer, no makeup at all, wearing a basic tank top, a pillow Breastfeeding is her main accessory. Or maybe like Gisele, who wrote in her memoir a few years ago that early motherhood was actually pretty tough for her — not the glamorous “baby spa day” pictured here. Her 2013 celebrity photo might imply. “Everything may look perfect on the outside, but you don’t know what’s really going on,” she said in an interview at the time. As it happens, patterns can lead the way.
