A situation like Flint Michigan is a national embarrassment. Sheriff Joe is a national embarrassment. Public KKK rallies that end in a public murder are a national embarrassment. Ferguson and the results of the DoJ is a national embarrassment. And yet, the national government takes no responsibility for these systemic problems. Abdication of responsibility is seen as a valid political platform. We have an expectation that a leader who fucks up, resigns. We have more than two political parties so that when one fucks up they can be kicked down a lot. We don’t have months of impeachment handwringing we have a day of a nonconfidence vote. Our elections are done in a fraction of the time. A party that wants to get elected doesn’t spend years figuring it out. We expect government to get shit done. If there’s a fuck up, we demand inquiries and get them. We might be polite, but with regards to government, we expect action.
