There were 2 couples sitting at tables on both sides of us, which surprised us because there are mostly only men when we go to the gentlemen’s clubs. We struck conversations with both couples as they both were very friendly. I joked and told the ladies that they should give their husbands a lap dance and they agreed if I agreed to do the same. For some reason, whenever I dress up, I feel really pretty, but then a weird sadness takes over me, because I feel like for what I am wearing, I should be doing something else or be somewhere else. Do clothes tell you something about a person? Well, of course, they do! Nowadays, however, it doesn’t seem to matter much. Princes and paupers wear jeans! Things were very different in the class conscious Britain of my early childhood (1930’s). People were classed, not only by their accent, but by the clothes they wore. In Scotland, for example, any man wearing a “bonnet” (flat cap) was working class, as was a woman with a shawl on, possibly with a wean (baby) carried in it. Any man wearing a trilby was middle class – posh! In England a man wearing a top hat was very important – at least an M.P.! A bowler denoted someone who worked in the city (a city gent!) – definitely middle class. A trilby or fedora wearer was a white collar worker and thus to be popped into the lower middle class. It was very important that you maintained your status, hence the Station master (who actually sported a bowler) or other manager wearing the correct hat for their standing in the Community. Oh, it went on and on. You really could class someone by their clothing. It didn’t seem to matter whether you were a decent person or not, you were immediately put Into that particular class – you and all your family!
Digressing slightly, how women dressed was important, but tricky! A “good” girl would never wear a low neckline during the day. You dressed modestly and didn’t bring disrespect upon your family! I can remember in the late 1940’s, I had a new party dress, with a rather low neckline – gosh I thought I was the bee’s knees! My father (born 1896) saw me going out to a school dance and called to my mother, “Margaret, Margaret, are you going to let your daughter go out in that dress? The neighbours will think she’s a wanton!” Thank goodness times have changed! Here I sit in a very old pair of creased jeans and, because it’s very hot today, a vest top. I’ll be going out soon, so shall change into an uncreased pair of jeans and a fresh top. I can hear both my parents saying, “You’re not going out in public in those clothes, are you!”
