My best friend stood up for someone else in like 3rd grade not long after that policy began, got suspended for the week, his dad high fived him, took him for ice cream and to go see whatever Star Wars movie had just come out. My four children have all gone to a public elementary school that requires uniforms – a red or blue polo shirt, and blue or khaki shortspants. In the same district about two miles away is another public elem school that does not require uniforms, and we have many friends whose children have attended there. By far, there’s less bullying at the school with uniforms. Anecdotal, but still valid, I think. The caveat is that there’s only less bullying in terms of money, status, and clothing choice. Kids are kids, and there’s always a tendency for kids to point out which can turn into bullying differences. The kid who wears glasses, or the kid who talks with a lisp, or the kid who’s short for his age may still get picked on regardless of whether he’s wearing a uniform or a Vans t-shirt. Because they are still immature, naive and also very excited at the same time after they graduate and they feel that they have been free from all pressures they had before in high school. High schools in Indonesia are very competitive now and I understand many Indonesian High School students get depressed during their years of study.
My high school closed for good in 1972, but the memory of Have fun but don’t sin lives on. At all the milestone class reunions, the party favors have been coffee mugs emblazoned with that motto. Not wearing correct uniform, of the approved size, and in the approved manner. How hard is that to understand If I had turned up at school with my trouser cuffs not even shaking hands with my shoes, I would have been sent home to change, for looking like a bloody clown. 2.If you return a library book late, your parents would have to return it and explain why it’s late. It worked about as well as you would think. The rule lasted a few months before they figured it wasn’t worth the cost of replacing all the books. 3.Zero tolerance, which means if you are involved with fighting, you will be kicked out. No questions asked. They think it would means no more fighting.
I went to Senior High School 67 Halim Jakarta 17 years ago and I still recall the school issued warning to students who would stain their uniforms, they would be sanctioned firmly and the school meant it by calling some Provost from Indonesia Airforce to patrol around the school area. The result no student who graduated daring to stain their uniforms. One student was idiot enough to stain his uniform with pilox and his face got slapped by the scary looking provost in front of his friends. We never had uniforms but i always though the kids who went to the private school looked proper smart wearing collared shirts under their pullovers. Before the pandemic of COVID-19, Japanese and Chinese tourists wiped out the shelves clean buying it as a souvenir to wear as Cosplay fetish During the college years, my sister got a death threat from a man if she disallowed him to meet her after her study in that uniform.
