Verity Smiley-JonesIt wouldn’t be show season without an emphasis on flawless skin. Bare-faced and glowy beauties stormed the Burberry runway thanks to Ammy Drammeh; Isamaya Ffrench kept things luminous at Mowalola with her Skinlacq and appliqué LED lights, and Sofia Tilbury created a supernatural glow at Christopher Kane. Last fall, Sharon Stone took to social media to share some very personal health information: The 64-year-old actress revealed that after a misdiagnosis led to an incorrect (unnamed) procedure, lingering pain nudged her to get a second opinion from another doctor. It was then that she discovered it was fibroids. She wrote, “Ladies in particular: Don’t get blown off. Get a second opinion. It can save your life.” Stone is one of many, many women who will contend with fibroids in their lifetime—by age 50, that’s 70% of white women and 80% of Black women; 60% of Black women will, in fact, have fibroids by age 35. The fibroid numbers are high, and so too is the amount of confusion, misinformation, and misdirection (often even by medical professionals) around how and when they should be treated.
Lilac hues at Conner Ives.Victor VIRGILE/Getty ImagesHigh-octane energy came by way of electric color palettes this season. Jolts of acid tones— mauves and slime green—lit up models’s lids at Conner Ives, thanks to makeup artist Lucy Bridge. Elsewhere, Terry Barber took his cues from Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden with washes of lilac, silver, and aquamarine around the eyes for a soft and feminine look on Richard Quinn’s runway. Inspired by Lughnasa, the Irish harvest festival, at Simone Rocha, Cyndia Harvey echoed the natural textures of the collection in the hair with curled braids and ringlets that eyes peeped out from beneath. Braids were also a standout feature at Yuhan Wang, where Adam Garland weaved colorful ribbons into extra-long side plaits for a romantic touch.
As for the hair and makeup, there were countless standout looks, and the breakaway beauty trends offer something for everyone: from electric hues and ’20s pin curls to smoky eyes and goth-girl lips. Here are the best beauty trends from the fall 2023 shows. Smoky eyes were front and center this season, bringing a gothic eeriness to Erdem’s Victorian dystopia, thanks to Jane Richardson, and giving a ’90s edge (note the use of brown) to Nensi Dojaka’s party girl courtesy of makeup artist Lucia Pica. Charles McQuillan/BFC/Getty Images1920s-inspired pin curls brought the glam at Harris Reed, where hairstylist Ali Pirzadeh created sculptural forms to mimic the clothing, dipping them in gold leaf for added drama. Elsewhere, sleek lacquered waves offered a futuristic take on Old Hollywood glam at Richard Quinn, courtesy of Sam McKnight. Tapping into the goth-girl mood that’s been sweeping both the red carpets and the streets of late, Roksanda delivered on romance with the ultimate vampiric lip, courtesy of Rebecca Davenport. Meanwhile, Sofia Tilbury mixed deep rouge noir ombre lips with bejeweled black pouts at Harris Reed for some dark decadence.
