She “came in hot” to a recording session the next day with a concept in mind for the song, a summery slice of Euro pop about what it feels like to be a single woman in her 30s navigating dating apps. Together with songwriters Alex Hope and Nate Cyphert, she brainstormed some of the worst dates imaginable and wrote them out on a whiteboard: What if his mom made the food? What if he harvested your organs?
“Beach House” was penned at a particularly low moment for Jepsen, when pandemic-induced boredom made her do something she never thought she would: join a dating app. “It was only for a brief, hot minute!” she stresses. Jepsen struck up a conversation with a guy who seemed like a catch at first glance. He even invited her up to his place in Malibu before casually mentioning that he had a girlfriend. (“Hope you’re cool with that.”) Recounting the interaction with her sister over a bottle of wine later that evening, she proclaimed, “And what’s in it for me? Some guy with a beach house who’s probably gonna hurt my feelings?”
The song may be deeply cheeky, but there’s truth in it too. “There’s that part before every date where a girl texts her friends her location and says, ‘I’m alone with this guy tonight, so if I go missing, his name is so-and-so,’” she half jokes. “There are a few factors to consider in terms of security!” Just as Jepsen has started wisening up to her own romantic impulses—“I’ve lived through a lot of heartbreak, and I have the songs to show for it,” she says with a laugh—she’s also learned to sing about ex-boyfriends without romanticizing them, as she does on tour with “Julien,” a musical promise to a man she once placed on a pedestal. “To the last breath that I breathe / I’ll be whispering Julien,” she coos—but as it turns out, she told the crowd at Radio City Music Hall, “that guy was kind of a dick!”
