These days, Meagher is growing his focus beyond YouTube as platforms like TikTok are becoming increasingly important. There, Meagher seems focused on producing grabby short-form content about viral trends or moments, such as a buzzy heat-reactive Ferragamo outfit worn by Zendaya or Rihanna’s Super Bowl halftime show look. “It’s an adapt-or-die mentality,” Meagher said of following his audience wherever they’re at. With a name derived from the Lakota tribe’s historical Tokala Society—a group of warriors who showed bravery and leadership from a young age—Tokala is a photography series spotlighting the next generation of BIPOC climate activists. The residents of Hog Hammock, a small community on Sapelo Island, have been weathering storms for centuries. They can tell when a tempest is brewing. Occurring from February 17th to the 22nd this year, various festivals and parades—filled with samba dancers in elaborate, colorful costumes—were held across the country in honor of the festive season, which celebrates the beginning of Lent. For years now, Brazilian singer-songwriter and drag queen Pabllo Vittar has engaged in such celebrations in her native country—but she says this year’s Carnaval was especially meaningful. “It is my favorite time of year, and I missed it for the past two years,” says Vittar. “Carnaval is a moment that you can shine even more! The outfits, the energy, the party; The feeling is unlike anything I have ever experienced in the world yet.”
Other designers got it too. Over the last seven years, Meagher has not only amassed industry clout—he fields invitations from Prada, Loro Piana, Tommy Hilfiger, and other brands—but also financial independence. As his channel grew in popularity, he decided to pause pursuing his degree at FIT in 2019 and focus on social media full-time. (He intends to complete the course someday.) For now, he relishes his independence. “It can be lonely. But I don’t think I could do the corporate ladder and all that,” Meagher said to the prospect of working for a fashion publication or brand someday. “Not being able to be direct about things is the antithesis of my personality.” An outsider-insider approach to fashion is nothing new. Since the dawn of the internet, fashion enthusiasts outside of glossy publications have carved out important spaces for themselves within fashion. There were the highly read street style blogs of Tavi Gevinson and BryanBoy, which catapulted both to front-row fame. But unlike his predecessors—and in line with many old-school critics—a highly curated and unique sense of style is not part of Meagher’s success. Business of Fashion placed Meagher on the prestigious BoF 500 list—which celebrates people shaping the fashion industry in major ways—and praised him for “bringing fashion criticism to the digital age.” Interview magazine has tapped him to review shows and trends. In the future, he wants to pivot to television. “I’d love to do something history based,” he said. (A self-professed fashion-history buff, he owns multiple bookshelves full of coffee-table books on the subject.) “Maybe I could track the lesser-known history of brands on the show or something like that.”
