Julia Fox may be bringing back thick, black, winged eyeliner—but Lil Nas X delivered a fresh new liner trick at the 2022 Grammys tonight. To match the hues of his beaded Balmain ensemble, the “Montero” rapper embraced a sky-blue eye look to match. But instead of applying a thick coating of liner around the eye, or a high dose of pigment across the lids, he opted for a more subtle approach, incorporating just a swipe of metallic blue liner in the inner corners. The artist’s look tonight was done by makeup artist Grace Pae, who also did Nas’s makeup for the recent LACMA gala and MTV VMAs, among other moments. But with her latest moment of creativity, focusing on just a pop of color in the inner corners, she’s onto something.
“We wanted to go with something that would complement the dress Rachel was wearing while keeping her young and fresh,” explained hairstylist David von Cannon, who put a new twist on her recently-sheared crop with an ultra-chic flipped bob. “We chose a center part to keep with the cool-girl vibe we wanted,” explains von Cannon, who prepped Zegler’s lengths using Bumble and Bumble’s Thickening Full Form mousse to build volume and supply heat protection. “I really wanted to incorporate high shine to accentuate the sleekness,” he adds. After flat ironing lengths to gleaming effect, von Cannon added the flipped ends and applied Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil finishing spray for extra shine. “I flicked it out a little on the ends to give it a nod to the glamour of the dress.”
